Meet the Black-Owned Makeup Brand Inspired by Dominican-American Culture

PARTNER BRAND SPOTLIGHT

In recognition of Black Philanthropy Month, WOC has chosen to amplify the incredible products and services of its partner brands, who have so generously allowed WOC members exclusive discounts. WOC has carefully curated its partners, who with the exception of publications, are all people or woman of color-owned businesses.

When we support economies of color, we are helping the philanthropic cycle thrive. Strong business = the possibility for raising and giving more funds to the causes that deserve them.

Beauty fans of WOC, do you recall what inspired you on your beauty journey?

For sisters and co-Founders of Luna Magic Beauty, Mabel and Shaira Frías, it was their mother. Having grown up around women who brought glamour into their everyday lives but observing an industry that did not represent the vast lived experiences of Latinas, Mabel and Shaira set out to define a space that spoke to their heritage.

Thus, the birth of Luna Magic Beauty. When developing their brand and their line of products, Mabel and Shaira drew from their Afro-Latina and Dominican-American upbringing; Telenovelas, music, and the boundless, vibrant colors — a true celebration of their culture with a fun and dynamic personality. The brand is drawing global fans in this space that they’ve carved and has even been worn by rapper, Cardi B.

We have all these ideas inspired by our up-bringing. Our family.

So who are the Frías sisters?

Mabel draws on over a decade of extensive experience in e-commerce merchandising strategy, having worked with brands that include Nordstrom and Savage x Fenty by Rihanna.

Shaira focuses on product development with her background as a professional makeup artist and as a journalist. Shaira also conducts demos for their products on their Instagram in Spanish.

I feel that it has made our bond super strong. It has made us better sisters. Better friends.
— Shaira Frías

With their combined skills, it seemed inevitable that they would join forces to create a beauty brand. Now, together as family, Mabel and Shaira Frías bring us into their world of color, fun and inclusive glamour.
