Meet Shea Yeleen: The Ethical Shea Butter Brand That Empowers its Makers

PARTNER BRAND SPOTLIGHT

In recognition of Black Philanthropy Month, WOC has chosen to amplify the incredible products and services of its partner brands, who have so generously allowed WOC members exclusive discounts. WOC has carefully curated its partners, who with the exception of publications, are all people or woman of color-owned businesses.

When we support economies of color, we are helping the philanthropic cycle thrive. Strong business = the possibility for raising and giving more funds to the causes that deserve them.

Important fact for the ladies of WOC: Did you know that Shea butter is traditionally harvested and produced by women in Africa?

Shea Yeleen International, Inc partners with women producers who use traditional techniques to bring us all natural, high quality Shea butter. Shea Yeleen was founded in 2005 by Rahama Wright, Founder, with the goal to empower women in West Africa through the production and sale of Shea butter.

My mission in life is simple: create living wage jobs for women who produce shea butter.
— Rahama Wright

Shea Yeleen works directly with women-owned cooperatives in Ghana so that profits will return to these rural communities and elevate standards of living. This partnership creates a more equitable and sustainable supply-chain that reduces harm to African producers, particularly to women — all the while providing authentic Shea butter, denoted by their yellow or beige color, derived from the shea nut, to consumers.

Prior to Shea Yeleen’s inception, Rahama Wright was a Peace Corps volunteer who served in Mali. She brings her experiences and knowledge on women’s work to Shea Yeleen while advocating for local communities as well as fair and just global supply chain for Shea butter.
