Description

The VP of Development and/or Chief Development Officer (CDO) plays a pivotal leadership role, working with a skilled development staff and highly experienced and collaborative teams across the organization, to showcase the organization’s impact and broaden financial support for our work and mission.

The VP/CDO is part of CBPP’s leadership team and reports directly to CBPP’s President. Working in close collaboration with others, the VP/CDO will set the strategic direction for the development function, secure philanthropic grants and gifts to ensure CBPP’s fiscal stability and growth, deepen the culture of philanthropy across the organization, and build relationships with core funding partners and prospects. They will also manage a dynamic fundraising team and serve as an ambassador for the organization.

Responsibilities

Fundraising Strategy and Execution

  • Work in close collaboration with the President and leadership to establish fundraising goals, set strategic priorities, advise on program development, and raise funds to meet or exceed annual revenue targets.

  • Set priorities for, manage, and further strengthen a team of talented professionals in foundation fundraising and grant writing, grants management, and individual gifts.

  • Provide ongoing guidance and motivation, ensure strong internal communication, evaluate performance, and provide opportunities for personal and professional growth.

  • Cultivate supporters to maximize philanthropic engagement as well as prepare and coach other key leaders as they engage with donors.

  • Collaborate closely with CBPP’s communications team on developing materials, shaping the organization’s message to donors, and promoting the visibility of the organization.

  • Collaborate closely with the finance department to be a strategic partner in analyzing the organization’s financial resources and needs, monitor revenues and identify funding needs, track revenue and strategically evaluate financial position, and implement strategies to meet these needs, ensuring accurate financial forecasting.

  • Partner with senior program staff to share their expertise, vision, and impact effectively with funders.

  • Educate them about their role in advancing a culture of philanthropy and provide opportunities to leverage their respective networks to expand the donor base and support for the organization.

Partner and Board Engagement

  • Work closely with the Senior Vice President for State Fiscal Policy and the Director of Network Philanthropic Engagement, who guide efforts to build financial support for the State Priorities Partnership and provide extensive training and coaching on fundraising strategies for the state organizations in the State Priorities Partnership.

  • Engage the Boards of Directors deeply in the fundraising process to help cultivate a strong relationship between board members and the organization.

  • Develop trusting relationships within CBPP that can facilitate strategic conversations around priorities and fundraising that center equity and consider organizational trade-offs transparently.

  • Help funders in understanding how CBPP’s work, partnerships, and strategies promote racial and economic justice.

Organizational and Team Leadership

  • Serve as a member of CBPP’s Leadership Group to support the overall management of the organization, including contributing to the development of internal policies and practices and improving organization health, equity, and inclusion.

  • Bring a philanthropic lens to the strategic discussions and decisions of the organization as a member of the leadership team.

  • Lead the development team, including developing and maintaining systems and practices for effective project and staff management, and support them in reaching the goals and objectives set forth in the annual work plan.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the team and with staff across CBPP, including helping staff across CBPP understand the development needs of the organization and engage in fundraising effectively.

  • Build and nurture a culture of philanthropy, ensuring that it is integrated into the fabric of daily operations.

  • Manage across lines of difference and implement team equity goals that shape how the team works together, its partnerships, and its engagement with key stakeholders.

Requirements

  • A successful candidate must have an outstanding record of leading fundraising activities within the non-profit and/or education sector.

  • Successful candidates will have a broad mix of knowledge, skills, and experience such as:

    • At least ten years of experience leading successful development functions with a focus on institutional and foundation giving in addition to individual donor fundraising of significant size and scope.

  • Experience with events and sponsorships a plus.

  • A successful track record of building strong relationships with foundation and individual donors, with extensive experience bringing major philanthropic gifts from initial expressions of interest, through program and proposal development, to closure.

  • Extensive knowledge of the philanthropic landscape relevant to social and economic justice.

  • A demonstrated commitment to CBPP’s mission, including basic fluency in some of the priorities that shape CBPP’s work.

  • Experience managing multiple short- and long-term fundraising priorities and developing infrastructure and systems that support these fundraising strategies, including performance measures to monitor results.

  • Excellent leadership, management, and team-building skills, including the ability to motivate, inspire confidence in, set goals with, delegate to, and ensure the accountability of colleagues.

  • Demonstrated success in strategic thinking, planning, implementation, and problem-solving. A high degree of flexibility, dedicated work ethic, and the ability to manage in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

  • Experience that demonstrates an unwavering commitment to the highest standards of quality, performance, and organizational integrity.

  • Deep understanding of, and a commitment to, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in managing and developing talent, communicating the priorities of the organization externally, and operating as an organizational leader committed to strengthening our DEI practices. Skilled in building authentic relationships with diverse stakeholders.

  • Capacity to learn and understand CBPP’s multi-faceted work and think creatively about how to communicate about that work to current and prospective funders.

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and extensive experience managing communications with varied audiences.

  • Comfort with Microsoft Office Suite; Salesforce or other CRM or donor databases systems experience a plus. Willingness to travel.

CBPP currently operates on a hybrid work schedule of two in-office days (Tuesday and Wednesday) per week as well as the first Thursday of each month in our Washington, D.C. office. Travel is expected, around 10 percent per year of the individual’s time. This position reports to the President.

  • Terms of Employment: full-time, exempt.

  • Bargaining Unit Status: This is not a bargaining unit position.

Salary Range and Employee Benefits

The salary range for the role is $200,000 to $225,000 annually, with the exact salary to be determined based on total relevant experience.
