About the Organization

America’s National Park System, with more than 400 national park sites across every state and nearly every territory, includes national monuments and memorials, battlefields and military parks, historic sites, preserves and reserves, lakeshores and seashores, recreation areas, wild and scenic riverways and other protected places. These places help maintain ecological diversity, tell the history of this country, provide a place for relaxation and respite as well as recreation and education, and generate jobs and billions of tourism dollars for local communities. They express values we hold dear: democracy, community, tradition, spirituality and justice.

National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) is the voice for our National Park System — a powerful, nonpartisan organization that works at every level of influence, from communities to Congress, to advance the visionary promise of our National Park System. NPCA was founded in 1919, just three years after the National Park Service, by its first director, Stephen Mather. He and the first NPCA executive director, Robert Sterling Yard, knew national parks needed a voice, separate from the federal government, whose sole responsibility was to protect and enhance parks for present and future generations.

Together with nearly 1.4 million members and supporters, NPCA works to make sure national parks have the resources they need and the protections they deserve. That includes securing park funding for everything from visitor centers to visitor programs, ensuring their air is clear and their water is clean, fighting to help their wildlife thrive, and striving to ensure America's stories are told. Join us as we inspire the next generation of national park visitors to care for them just as much as we do. NPCA is a $40 million nonprofit advocacy organization with over 150 employees working in Washington, D.C. and 27 regional and field offices around the country.
