Development Director, Organizing

National Domestic Workers Alliance / Care in Action
Remote

Anticipated Start Date: December

Description

We seek a seasoned development professional to act as Development Director, Organizing during this pivotal time of expansion. Reporting to the Senior Director of Institutional Giving, you will own fundraising strategy and implementation for our grassroots organizing, field-building, and state and local policy campaigns, which are critical strategies for building worker power and leadership, delivering tangible wins to our base, and bolstering broader national priorities. Organizing is at the heart of NDWA’s work and informs all our other strategies; our alliance has an on-the-ground presence in key locales, including seven chapters staffed by NDWA employees and 63 independent affiliate organizations.

Your primary responsibilities will include sustaining existing philanthropic partnerships with supporters of this work, while also building new relationships to meet revenue growth goals specific to this portfolio. You will coordinate with staff across departments to produce persuasive written materials such as proposals, reports, and concept notes. The right person for this role will have at least 4-6 years of demonstrated, successful experience independently stewarding funder relationships and writing grant proposals and other funder materials, and will be able to navigate competing priorities while moving from project to project with ease.

As a member of a high-performing, collaborative, and expanding Development Department, you’ll also play a key role in shaping evolving team operations and culture. This position collaborates closely with leaders from the Organizing team. As such, experience fundraising for movement-based organizations with deep field and membership presence will be important. It is envisioned that a Manager-level role will be added to support this portfolio and would be supervised by this position; exact timing is dependent on need and the broader Development Department’s evolution.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the Development Department to help implement the overall fundraising plans for NDWA and Care in Action, including by acting as a thought partner to executive, program, and development leadership to help build strong and diverse revenue streams.

  • Manage a growing portfolio of 30+ active funders specifically supporting NDWA’s grassroots organizing, field-building, and state and local policy campaigns while identifying and cultivating additional prospects to sustain and/or grow restricted funding to core programs.

  • Establish strong working relationships with lead programmatic staff within the Organizing team to cultivate funders and prospects, and collaborate closely with the newly-created Affiliate Resource Mobilization Manager role to support affiliate fundraising training and sustainability.

  • Lead on and/or support the development of well-written content that blends storytelling and data to articulate programmatic priorities, impact, and pivots for various organizing, field, and local/state policy funder audiences.

  • This will primarily consist of grant proposals and reports, but also includes concept notes, organizational case statements, questionnaires and application forms for competitive awards, government-issued RFPs, and other organizational and program overviews.

  • Proactively gather the information necessary to keep development writing for your portfolio fresh and accurate, including by building positive inter-departmental working relationships with NDWA staff leading our chapter, affiliate, and local policy work.

  • Liaise with NDWA’s Finance Department on budget creation, financial reporting, and regular reconciliation of projected and actual revenue and expenses for your portfolio.

  • Own and drive large projects like chapter and affiliate fundraising pilots, discrete fundraising campaigns, and other projects as needed, ensuring that deadlines are met and content is generated by numerous people across teams.

  • In collaboration with Development Department colleagues and grantwriting consultants, ensure the 65+ annual funder deadlines in your portfolio are met.

  • Supervise more junior development staff and/or consultants supporting your portfolio as needed.

  • Develop and maintain a deep working knowledge of relevant programs’ history, vision, mission, values, strategic goals, and programs.

  • Participate in other activities as needed, including organization-wide retreats, monthly meetings, and staff studies.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Travel Requirement: 10%

Requirements

  • At least 4-6 years of experience in portfolio management and grant writing, preferably in social justice-related nonprofits or movement organizations, or similar work in the public or private sectors.

  • Robust understanding of organizing and movement-based organizations and/or experience working with organizers strongly preferred.

  • Familiarity with issues facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, and women of color, as well as experience across 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 organizations a major plus.

  • Ideal candidates will have exceptional English-language research, writing, and editing skills – and take joy in storytelling!

  • Project management skills and the ability to juggle deadlines, manage details to ensure smooth day-to-day operations, and be flexible in an environment where priorities can shift quickly.

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt writing style to different donor audiences and mediums.

  • Demonstrated experience editing others’ work and flexibility to rework content as needed through multiple drafts.

  • Experience reviewing organizational or project financial statements and budgets.

  • Deep sense of initiative, ability to work independently and as part of a high-performing team, and ability to manage up and across as necessary.

  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office and Google programs and development research tools.

  • Familiarity with development CRMs (e.g., Salesforce, EveryAction) a major plus. Alignment with NDWA’s and Care in Action’s mission, vision, and values.
