In Her Own Words
What is your favorite book?
The Bible
What is your favorite quote?
“Everything in divine time and order.”
Who is your favorite woman fundraiser or philanthropist of color?
I follow the work of two women very closely: Birgit Smith Burton and Janine Lee.
Do you have a favorite city?
St. Croix, US Virgin Islands (not a traditional “city,” but my favorite zip code!)
What inspired you to work in fundraising?
My mother needed fundraising support with the school she founded in South Carolina. I was an undergraduate at Clemson University at the time, so I wrote grants and helped with special events. It's been a fun journey ever since!
Do you have any advice for other women of color working in fundraising or institutional philanthropy?
Know the difference between your “job” and your “calling,” and be purposeful and resolute in aligning the two.
