Views from the C-Suite: Dr. Jacqueline Copeland

Interview Highlights

Black Philanthropy Month [...] exists to celebrate, educate and advance Black giving [...] It is my love letter to the community.
— Dr. Jacqueline Copeland

On Black Philanthropy

  • Black Philanthropy Month was created to document the generosity of Black people throughout history and around the world.

  • Globally, Black people only receive 1-2% in institutional philanthropy and only 1-2% of business funding.

    • The disparity is “even worse for Black women.”

On Black joy

  • It is especially necessary for Black women, as both caregivers and organizers of the community.

  • It is more than self-care but nurturing one’s spiritual self.

On getting and staying in the C-Suite

  • Know your purpose and have it be your north star for your career and your life.

  • Center your self-care on you; not how it can serve others. Self-care must sustain you in your purpose and in life.

  • Build a supportive community that will uplift you and celebrate your successes.
