TITLE:     Associate Director of Membership and Individual Support
STATUS:     Full-Time, Year-Round 
LOCATION:     Hybrid; must live within 3-hour driving distance of Jacob’s Pillow. In-person work is required June-August.

WORKS WITH:    Philanthropy Operations Manager, Assoc Director of Major Gifts and Corporate Sponsorships, Marketing team

HOURS:     Schedule will fluctuate and often require nights and weekends, travel
SUMMER ONLY:      Three meals a day, free access to classes, performances, talks, and studio usage. 

The position of Associate Director of Philanthropy for Membership and Individual Support is a tremendous opportunity for an experienced Membership and individual giving professional to deepen and expand a growing and loyal core of support for Jacob’s Pillow, including upper Membership levels of the Ted Shawn Circle ($2,000 - $9,999), School Sponsorship ($5,500) and other program area Member sponsorship circles where there could be potential (i.e. Community Engagement and Archives).

The successful post-holder will also have portfolio oversight of individual giving appeal strategies, planned giving, and Member stewardship. The Associate Director of Philanthropy for Membership & Individual Support reports to the Chief Philanthropy Officer and is responsible for managing a portfolio of approximately 150 donors and prospects, as well as more than 80 planned giving Members of the Pillow’s Landmark Circle. 

This year-round, full-time position will directly supervise the Manager of Membership & Individual Support, and guide fundraising strategies and tactics for increasing contributed income from individuals and Members. Preference in applications will be given to individuals who are based either in the Berkshires, the region that surrounds Jacob’s Pillow’s home in Becket, Massachusetts, as well as Boston or in New York City. This role can include working remotely during a great deal of the year with monthly travel to Becket and/or other locations, as needed. During the summer Festival (June through late August) the position will be based in the Berkshires. Housing support can be provided for the summers, in cases where it is needed.

The Associate Director of Philanthropy for Membership & Individual Support is responsible for cultivating their portfolio of higher level Members and supporter groups, directing relevant prospect research and wealth tracking, managing the growth and stewardship of particular groups (particularly 80+ School Sponsors), overseeing events and appeals for these constituencies and working closely with senior staff at the Pillow and the Board of Directors.

The annual income generated by Membership and Individual Support is growing steadily and is expected to be more than $2 million in 2025.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of circa 200 prospects and current donors, maintaining frequent personalized contact.

  • Qualify, cultivate, and solicit donors for funding to meet the Pillow’s individual support priorities and fundraising goals.

  • Design and implement effective strategies and tactics to actively engage Members and lead to solicitations and closed pledges and gifts.

  • Lead and manage the School Sponsorship program, growing this important resource and using it as a stepping stone for increased engagement for the major gifts and planned giving pipelines.

  • Spearheaded creative thinking for refreshed Membership models as the Pillow prepares to open the new Doris Duke Theatre in 2025. 

  • Manage the gift, pledge, and fulfillment processes for relevant Members and gifts.

  • Expand the Individual Giving area of Pillow fundraising at all levels by mentoring the Manager of Membership and Individual Support to cultivate these relationships to actively result in additional and increased membership and annual gifts.

  • Work closely with the Chief Philanthropy Officer to develop and deliver creative strategies, donor initiatives and events to increase Membership and individual support. 

  • Embody and uphold the Pillow’s clear and stated goals in inclusion, diversity, equity, and access.

  • As needed, provide support to involve the Executive & Artistic Director of Jacob’s Pillow, Chief Philanthropy Officer, other key staff members, and volunteer leadership in developing prospect relationships.

  • Produce briefing materials and post-visit follow-up communications.

  • Meet budgetary and planning goals for visits, solicitations, events, and closing gifts.

  • Promptly record meetings and essential information in the database and manage prospects and gifts.

  • Report on activity metrics, levels, and income to measure progress with the partnership of the Philanthropy Operations Manager and the Manager for Membership and Individual Support. 

  • Effectively utilize administrative support and delegate tasks as appropriate.

PRIORITIES IN THE FIRST 6 MONTHS

  • With partnership from the team and input from Senior Leadership to evaluate, recommend, and deliver a refreshed Membership benefits and tiering structure.

  • Oversee the communications and delivery, tracking, and stewardship for the year-end appeal (fiscal year ends on 12/31/2024), with a particular focus on managing the Pillow’s leadership’s engagement to ensure a successful campaign. 

  • Connect with all School Sponsors and confirm at least 80% support for 2025 before spring 2025. 

  • Maximize the opportunities using the Pillow’s partnership with FreeWill to increase planned giving touchpoints and engagement through collateral and highlighting National Estate Planning Awareness Week in October.

  • Develop creative strategies and engagement for Membership and Individual support in anticipation of the opening of the reimagined Doris Duke Theatre in the Summer of 2025. 

Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum seven years of fundraising experience and a track record of success in building and sustaining Membership programs, managing planned giving, individual support, and in managing staff.

  • A passion for dance.

  • Experience working in non-profit organizations (preferably arts and/or dance-focused).

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent academic experience.

  • Proven experience in donor event planning and delivery. 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Superior interpersonal skills; genuine interest in people, and authentic curiosity.

SKILLS & QUALITIES

  • Must be self-motivated with a passion for meeting and exceeding goals.

  • Strong strategic and tactical thinker and planner.

  • Demonstrated ability to engage in collaborative problem-solving with prospects and colleagues; highly organized in portfolio and time management.

  • Must be able to establish and maintain excellent rapport with donor constituents and colleagues.

  • Able to operate both independently and as an active participant in team-based strategies.

  • Experience with drafting gift agreements and pledges is highly desirable. 

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, diplomacy, and confidentiality, and to exhibit a mature, professional, and positive approach at all times.

  • Versatile in standard office computer skills and a love for spreadsheets. 

  • Competency working in CRM systems, with a preference but not required for experience working in Tessitura.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Pushing, pulling, or lifting objects 25-50 lbs alone or with assistance

  • Working outside in inclement weather and wooded areas - Extended periods of standing and/or sitting

Salary Range and Employee Benefits

COMPENSATION: $90,000-$105,000
