The Power of “W-O-R-D-S” and Inclusive Language
Communication is one of our greatest gifts for growth, insights, innovation, and learning. Language and words that make up our communication can be complex and challenging, especially in today’s world of work and in the current political climate. The nonprofit sector leads the way in promoting persuasive language that aims to positively support the needs of many communities, groups, and populations and to aid in healing and progress. Nonprofit organizational leaders, staff, and boards impact communities they serve directly and indirectly with their words written and spoken. To solve complex societal problems, much of our efforts start with our words.
Taught by Winsome Foderingham, MPA, Innovations Strategy Consultant and Women of Color in Fundraising and Philanthropy (WOC) Radiant Leadership Institute’s Planning Committee member, this learning lab will inform, clarify, and provoke thoughts, ideas, and insights about the power of words. We will explore how we can make significant shifts in the language we use as fundraising and philanthropy professionals. From a practical perspective, the main objective of the Learning Lab is for participants to gain and share ideas for building their practice of effective fundraising communications strategies, from grant proposals to donor communications; reports to how we interact internally with our staff and teams. Language contributes to effectiveness in every organizational domain, and most importantly, it is key to you being an influential change agent.
